Visakhapatnam/Vijayawada A home-maker from the minority community took charge as Deputy Chairperson of Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council on Friday.

The State Government recently withdrew the Bill seeking repealing of abolition of the Council under the pretext that the Centre had not responded to its request for a long time.

Zakia Khanam, who called on Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy in his chambers thanked him profusely for reposing faith in her. The Chief Minister and other MLCs accompanied her to the podium and congratulated her.

Reddy said he was happy to see Zakia Khanam, a home-maker from an ordinary family, becoming a member and Deputy Chairperson for Legislative Council and added that it's a message for all minority women. He said the State Government has been striving hard for the last two and half years to empower women politically, socially and financially.
